What does the introduction of the new Environment Bill mean for your business?

The new Environment Bill was published in the Queen's speech this week setting out environmental legislation as we leave the European Union. The Bill will set legally binding improvement targets to reduce plastics, cut air pollution, restore biodiversity and improve water quality, to "protect and preserve this planet for generations to come".

Implementation of the measures detailed in the Bill will help to deliver the 25 Year Environment Plan, and either directly or indirectly support the objectives of 11 of the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals:

3 - Health & Wellbeing

6 - Clean Water and Sanitation

7 - Affordable Clean Energy

8 - Decent Work & Economic Growth

9 - Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure

12 - Sustainable Consumption and Production

11 - Sustainable Cities

13 - Climate Change Action

14 - Life Below Water

15 - Life on Land

16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Among the measures detailed in the Bill are to establish a new Office for Environmental Protection in Bristol, to increase local powers to tackle air pollution and to introduce charges for specified single use plastic items.
